Песня посвящена вождю казаков Стеньке Разину, который возглавил крупное восстание против дворянства и царской бюрократии на юге России в 1670–1671 годах. За свою причастность он был расчленен за измену 16 июня 1671 года. Песня о его путешествии по Волге и его судьбе. Текст песни написал Александр Навроцкий - убийца царя Александра II. The song is dedicated to the Cossack leader - Stenka Razin - who led a major uprising against the nobility and tsarist bureaucracy in southern Russia in 1670–1671.
