It is believed that the main reason was that they wanted to make Judo a more dynamic and spectator-friendly sport. A lot of people like this decision and a lot of people hate it. It doesn't matter what side you are on, you can't deny that competitive Judo lost some impressive throws. So here is a compilation with some amazing throws that involve leg grabbing.
