Bortniansky Here I present a series of photographs of Kamenets-Podolsky taken between 1874 and 1885 or later... When these photographs were taken, the city was part of the Russian Empire..... Today, the ancient city of Kamenets-Podolsky is in western Ukraine. The city was first mentioned in 1062 as a town of the Kievan Rus and In 1241 the town was destroyed by the Mongul Horde. In 1352, it was annexed by the Polish King Casimir III. In 1378 it became seat of a Roman Catholic Diocese. The ancient castle was reconstructed and substantially expanded by the Polish kings to defend Poland from the southwest against Ottoman and Tatar invasions. 1n 1672, the city, was briefly part of the Ottoman Empire following the Treaty of Buchach. The Russian Empire gained the city in 1793
